Trivia:

- I am finally done that freaking Linguistics project that was sucking out my soul. The result is 30 HAND-WRITTEN pages of only marginally decent analysis (given what they gave us to work with, they'd BETTER be happy with it.)

- I am currently drying a pair of undies and socks under my desk lamp, due to our dryer being out of commission. I am going to be VERY annoyed if I have to go to a laundromat to clean my shit before I fly to Perth.

- I should be working on a paper right now, but I don't wanna. I think I'll make it a late night and take a bit of time off now to snack and to watch an episode of TNG that I rented*. Maybe I'll get lucky and the paper will write itself (it won't be HARD, but still.)

* This is the first time I've actually seen "Encounter at Farpoint" all the way through. Odd.

Also odd: Deanna Troi was not wearing pants.

Also also odd, but kind of cool: neither was this guy! Apparently they were trying to suggest more "equality" between the sexes. I've always been annoyed that there aren't any real representations of queer folk in Star Trek, but it's nice to know that they originally had some INTENTIONS in that direction, at least. (Which were phased out pretty quickly, never to return again. Sigh.)

Mmm, TNG. I want to, at some point, buy all the episodes, and possibly have a mass Star Trek marathon over the subsequent weeks. :p

As for queerness, I always just apply my standard theory to why a lot of things don't have queer characters represented. Everyone other than the main characters are gay, but unfortunately since they're not main characters, we don't get to see any of it. :p

No, I don't actually believe this. And I came up with it to throw back at some people who were bitching about how J K Rowling was obviously a homophobe because she didn't plan to have Harry and Malfoy hook up. They just don't happen to get their time in the spotlight, that's all. All things considered, I'd sure the Enterprise had more than a few crew members who swung in other directions, but since they didn't get big plots happening around them, or weren't part of the regular bridge crew, we just didn't get to see it. :p

Haha, yeah, I tend to imagine the same thing. (Note to self: write TNG slash at some point in the near future.) But still, it says something that nobody really wants to make their main characters queer most of the time. (Joss Whedon gets mad props for making an effort in that regard.) And it's especially too bad for a show set so far in the future to have queer folk STILL be totally marginalized. (Then again, Sci-Fi tends to be a better reflection of current attitudes and anxieties than any particular vision of the future.)

[identity profile] eternalism.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Q/Picard for the win, man! I mean, there's no truer pairing in TNG! XD

Well, you have to give them some slack in that TNG, at least, was done in the later 80s and early 90s, when homosexuality was not nearly as accepted in mainstream culture as it is today. You're definitely right that sci-fi tends to reflect current attitudes more that potential future ones a lot of the time, which, realistically, isn't exactly an unexpected view, since the makers of sci-fi are writing it in whatever given era has those ideas in the first place. You can't expect a guy in the 60s to have the attitudes that will be common in 2020, for example. It may happen, but it's not going to be very common, and when you're writing stuff to try and sell it, unfortunately you've also got to pander to your audience. Give them something they don't want, and no one's going to buy it, which means no one's going to get exposed to it.

I admit, it still does kinda suck from a representative standpoint. At least things are a bit more open nowadays, which is definitely nice.

Oh god, and the episodes that I rented are all of the Q ones, too. Now I'm going to have Q/Picard slash dreams tonight. X-D THANKS.

Actually, I was having a conversation with a friend the other night about trek and its lack of queer representation, and he mentioned that they had actually WRITTEN a gay male couple as semi-prominent background characters for a few episodes. It was basically one of those situations where one of them was in sick bay and the other was visiting, and the only thing that told you that they were together was that they were asked one of those "so how long have you been seeing each other?" questions of some kind. Unfortunately it apparently freaked 'em out too much (like you said, can't blame 'em TOO much since it was the late 80's) and they just shot it as a heterosexual couple. But I'm amazed that the boys in dresses still made it in, even if only for characters in the background. The intention was there, even at the beginning, and that's pretty cool.

What cheeses me a bit is that the later treks didn't go anywhere with it (except when Dax made out with that other chick who she used to be married to in one of her symbiote's previous incarnations... and of course, that worked because they were two CHICKS, but I guess it's better than nothing...) The original trek had TV's first interracial kiss between Kirk and Uhura ... c'mon, people, take it into the 21st century and have some gay neckin'! The internet has proven that there are fangirls enough to warrant it! *laughs*

If you hadn't seen the pairing potential after watching them, I'd have to wonder if your slashdar was broken. :p I mean, just look at the way Q treats Picard! XD

*sigh* It's a shame my two favourite characters through all the ST series are entirely unlikely to ever get together. Not even in Alternate Universe Land. Which is a shame, since Tuvok and Seven would make such a hot couple. :p

Or cool, since they're both too unemotional to be hot. XD

...I missed Dax making out with another chick? ;_; Okay, I have a reason to start watching DS9 again! Like, srsly!

If another Star Trek series is made, I'll betcha there'll be a gay couple in it somewhere.

It's too bad you can't meet this friend I made through Script Frenzy here - we literally sat around last Saturday night talking about Star Trek (and other things... but a LOT of trek) until six in the morning. X-D I'm certain that many good conversations could be had between us. (Just typoed that as "hard". Clearly I am subconsciously moving into "Slash mode" X-D!!!)

Yeah, you're right about Seven/Tuvok, I'm having a hard time imagining them getting all hot and bothered over each other, too. It'd be like:

Seven: I find you sexually attractive.
Tuvok: *eyebrow raise* I see.
Seven: You will alert me when you enter Pon Farr.
Tuvok: Indeed.
Seven: *goes about business*
Tuvok: *also goes about business*
Harry: ... I'm just going to pretend I didn't hear that.

Wait - be still my heart, is it on YouTube? *searches*

IT IS! Of course. And it is both A) totally hot and B) just plain well-acted and... kind of sad... which is an awesome combination, if you ask me.

I'm going to need to find the whole episode once I get back home again... (Actually, they might have it at the rental place here. Gotta check it out, now.)

Talkin' Trek!

[identity profile] eternalism.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*snickersnort* Best and most realistic Tuvok/Seven ficlet ever! And just proves why sometimes two characters, no matter how much a fan likes 'em, just shouldn't get together.

(Though it's still more appealing, in my mind, than Seven and Chakotay. I still can't quite wrap my head around that little part of canon. O_o)

And yes, my god, that scene is hot. O_O

You and me, and possibly Griffin, need to have some Star Trek watching thingymabob when you get back!

Re: Talkin' Trek!

[identity profile] cassaclyzm.livejournal.com 2008-06-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I was tempted to continue that ficlet into a conversation between Harry and Tom that ended slashily, but I thought it would detract from the original Tuvok/Seven joke. X-D

And yeah, I agree about Seven/Chakotay. I mean, I don't find it totally insane or anything, but I'm not feelin' it particularly strongly, you know? It seems like they just wouldn't have been happy ending the series without pairing ONE of 'em off, so they went whole hog and got both in one go.

I agree. A trek marathon is called for. Hell, we should just pretend it's a convention and dress up. X-D

Every Tom and Harry need a little dick, though! *runs from the Pun Police*

It's possibly that I might feel the Seven/Chakotay vibe a little more strongly if I could ever see the episodes where she's starting to feel attraction toward him, but I never have. Eventually I'm sure I will, and I hope it'll see less out of left field then.

I have my old TNG communicator pin! :D Shame I don't still have my TNG pajamas, but if I did, they wouldn't fit me anymore anyway. :p

30 handwritten pages?! I have the worst time trying to handwrite anything, let alone 30 friggin pages! Being a lefty, writing anything by hand is a huge pain in the ass.

As for drying the clothes, good luck. I lived without a dryer for some time, and it irritated me to no end. You have my sympathy!

[identity profile] cassaclyzm.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind handwriting a BIT, but this is just crazy. And yet it's better than paying a whole bunch to print it all out (and it allows me to just attack it with the kind of wanton fury that can only be truly chanelled through handwriting.)

[identity profile] jadaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-05 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There was an episode of TNG that I still find painful to watch, not because it is bad, but because it hits close to home. There's a planet of people who are very committed to one gender, and there's hell to pay if you try to be another. Riker falls for someone who wants to be a woman. It's so... *crycry*

Also, sorta of funny that if there's no woman for Riker to hook up with, by golly, we'll *make* one for him, or else they will turn JUST FOR HIM. :P XD

I second, third and quadruple the Picard/Q slash concept!

[identity profile] cassaclyzm.livejournal.com 2008-06-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I liked that one, too. Been a while since I've seen it. Though it's kind of a copout to make that particular genderless being be played by a woman, though - it has the "Riker seduces them to the heteronormative side of the Force" kind of ring to it, like you were saying. *laughs* I don't know if this is true, but apparently Jonathan Frakes thought that the part should have been played by a male actor, which would have definitely made the whole episode play differently.

[identity profile] jadaze.livejournal.com 2008-06-06 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Which puts me in mind for wondering what other way they could have gone when they visited the planet where women dominated men - men who were very pretty. (-:
