As for queerness, I always just apply my standard theory to why a lot of things don't have queer characters represented. Everyone other than the main characters are gay, but unfortunately since they're not main characters, we don't get to see any of it. :p
No, I don't actually believe this. And I came up with it to throw back at some people who were bitching about how J K Rowling was obviously a homophobe because she didn't plan to have Harry and Malfoy hook up. They just don't happen to get their time in the spotlight, that's all. All things considered, I'd sure the Enterprise had more than a few crew members who swung in other directions, but since they didn't get big plots happening around them, or weren't part of the regular bridge crew, we just didn't get to see it. :p
