School, Money and Voice Work
Sep. 5th, 2008 04:40 pmMy last year as an undergrad has finally slouched to a start. I've always disliked how they start school halfway through the week. You start HALF of your courses then, and the rest the next week, and you generally feel totally unproductive for about a week and a half all-told while everybody gets into gear. If it was up to me, I'd cut out all of that mamby-pamby "here's the syllabus, let's talk about it for half an hour and then you can run away" business and jump right into the good stuff. But I am addicted to having my time structured for me, so I may not exactly be REPRESENTATIVE, if you know what I mean.
One problem: I have ZERO money this year. The study abroad thing cost me more than my ENTIRE last year is going to cost, and put a mighty, mighty dent into my and my parents' savings. (As in, it obliterated them. Heh heh. Oops?) I got a scholarship but it doesn't cover much, so my folks and I are scrambling to get my first semester's tuition paid while I apply for a student loan. (I would have applied earlier but I forgot my #$(%&@%$ing password). I know that I should have applied for WAY more scholarships, but FINDING them has always been a problem for me. I'm paying for it now, I guess. (Literally! *rimshot*)
Unsurprisingly, I'm looking for work. I need something flexible without TOO many hours (16 a week would be pushing it). This weekend I'm going to noodle around online and see what I can find, though I'm hoping to get a research position at the university or something in that vein. I'll also be understudying for someone at the Dinner Theatre who is pregnant and will eventually need to be replaced, so I'll get a bit of work around Christmas.
I also may become a VOICE ACTOR! [/dramatic announcer voice] I did a demo for a local company called "The Voice Factory" that provides voices for everything from phone systems to commercials to video game characters. They told me that I read well, and they really liked some of my character voices (I did a straight British "nanny" voice and a peppy Aussie "reality show announcer" kind of voice, as well as a giggly valley girl.) I'm crossing my fingers that they'll give me a ring now and then to work for them. In the meantime I'm looking into voice training, and hoping I'll have some more opportunities to work on my acting as well.
Now it's Friday night and I'm going to play the drums on Rock Band for a bit before I go to see my mum perform in the Dinner Theatre. My aunt who lives in Saudi Arabia is home to visit, as well, so I'll get to spend some time with her there. They've been doing this show since just after I left to go to Oz, so it should be pretty streamlined by now. I'm looking forward to seeing it.
