Call to Prayer
Mar. 21st, 2003 09:46 pmI just heard the Muslim call to prayer, broadcast from Baghdad while watching CNN on my break. Long, sombre notes, muffled by the distortion of being broadcast at a high volume for the city to hear. The sky was dark, the city quiet. The notes came in bursts, a brief melody of stretched sounds and trills, fading into bouts of silence. It gave me chills.
The CNN announcer kept piping up in the silences. Filling the gaps with banter, like a sports announcer.
